Handling Shocking News

This week, I received a piece of news that was so shocking, it stopped me in my tracks. I felt blindsided, upset, and even paralyzed for a while. 

 

Luckily, I have a lot of good tools which help me release stress, stay grounded, and bounce back quickly. 

 

This situation reminded me that things in your life can change in a split second. These types of changes are so sudden, can alter the course of your life, and are never what you expect. 

 

I wanted to take the opportunity to share some of my tools for handling shocking or unexpected news. 

 

1) Neuro-Emotional Technique (N.E.T.)

When we get shocking news, our brain and body doesn't always have the opportunity to fully process the event in one sitting. Sometimes, this is because we don't have the opportunity to take a break from our responsibilities to just sit still and process. When we don't get the chance to fully process, accept, or resolve a stressful or traumatic event, then stress can become "trapped" in the body. The stress may manifest as anxiety, physical pain, or self-sabotaging behavior. 

 

Neuro-Emotional Technique (N.E.T.) helps the body release the trapped stress in a safe and gentle way. It also helps you let go of any patterns which developed because of unhealthy coping mechanisms. For example, a "Type A" individual who feels the need to be busy every second of the day often does this because of a subconscious fear of going inward and resolving traumatic emotional experiences. Others develop unhealthy habits such as overeating and addictive or co-dependent behavior. 

 

2) Rescue Remedy

Have you ever heard of flower essence therapy? Unlike essential oils which are concentrated plant oils, flower essences are more of an energetic form of therapy designed to help you with emotional issues. One of my favorites to use when I've been exposed to a shocking or deeply emotional event is called Rescue Remedy by Bach Flower Remedies. It's a liquid that you add to your water to soothe emotional upset. You can find it at most natural grocers or heath food stores. Add 4 drops to your drinking water and sip often throughout the day repeating as necessary until you're feeling better. 

 

3) Crystal Therapy

When you receive shocking news, it immediately ungrounds you. When this happens, you lose your focus, make stupid mistakes, and feel paralyzed with fear or inaction. I like to use Rose Quartz for emotional soothing and healing along with Black Tourmaline for grounding my energy and helping me return to a positive mindset. You can wear the crystals as jewelry, place loose stones next to you, or carry them in a pouch. 

 

4) Homeopathic Aconite napellus (Acon.)

Homeopathy is a safe, effective way to bring about physical and emotional change. It's another form of energetic medicine working on the principle of "like treats like". A carefully chosen remedy will treat both physical and emotional symptoms. Each remedy has keynote symptoms which allow prescribers to select the appropriate remedy. Homeopathic Aconite is recommended when you've experienced an extreme shock. Often, a person will feel chilled but sip ice cold water, and be so shocked they can't cry or react in an appropriate way to the traumatic event. They often feel like they're in a fog, stupor, or unable to express emotions properly. 

 

Homeopathic Aconite can be purchased at natural grocers or health food stores in a pellet form. It's found in different potencies (or strengths), but it's often recommended to use a 30C potency for a beginning dose. Take 3 pellets under the tongue 1-2x/day or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner. 

 

Emotional shock comes in many different forms. Maybe it's a relationship suddenly ending, a car accident, or the sudden death of a loved one. Regardless of the source of the news, it's important to deal with the emotional upset quickly and completely to ensure continued emotional and physical health.
